Community Based Organisation in Nakivale Refugee settlement
BRIDGE: From Secondary Education and Skills Development to Job Opportunities for Refugee and Host Community Youth in Uganda .

Talented Orphan Healing Aid (TOHA) in partnership with War Child Canada and Mastercard Foundation, implement the BRIDGE Project. This project will be implemented from 2022 to 2027 and is designed to further the Mastercard Foundation’s Young Africa Works (Strategy 2018 to 2030) and address the youth unemployment challenge focusing on refugee and host communities in Uganda’s refugee settlements in Adjumani, Obongi, Isingiro, Kamwenge, Kikuube, Yumbe, Arua and Koboko districts. Through this project, TOHA will amplify its voice in the refugee and host community for collective actions with key education stakeholders, governments, and host communities to increase access to education for refugee and displaced children and youth in
Isingiro District.

SMART VISION LIBRARY (SVL) Program
SMART VISION LIBRARY (SVL)

In order to complement the gains made in the classroom at the Smile English School, TOHA has been accumulating a library of English language books. The library is available for use to all TOHA beneficiaries and contains 650 books, ranging from simple children’s stories more challenging literary classics and works of nonfiction.

SMILE ENGLISH SCHOOL (SES)

TOHA established the Smile English School in order to address a crucial need within the Burundian and Congolese communities in Nakivale Refugee Settlement. Both Burundi and the Democratic Republic of Congo are francophone countries, and many refugees from these nations have a limited or entirely nonexistent grasp of the English language.

Fighting Poverty in the Widowed and Providing Financial Literacy Through Promotion of Social Economic Development Group (VSLA)

This is a group of children caregivers composed of foster parents, widowed and people with special needs. They work hand in hand with our organization to care for vulnerable children. TOHA has supported them financially to help them obtain jobs that bring them together to solve their challenges

HOME TO HOME COVID-19 AWARENESS CAMPAIGN

Realizing the impact of COVID-19 in Uganda and being concerned by the effects of cuts to refugees’ rations and financial assistance, TOHA has resolved to address the COVID-19 pandemic by conducting a home-to-home COVID-19 awareness campaign. This campaign seeks to promote hygiene & sanitation, which are the only reliable ways to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

       GIRLS EMPOWERMENT IN ACTIONS (GEA)

The Girls Empowerment in Action (GEA) was implemented by TOHA to empower young adolescent girls who are jobless, alienated from the community, out of school, or stigmatized due to poverty or other factors. The TOHA team has initiated vocational training programs in tailoring, handcrafting, and hairdressing.

COVID-19 HOME KITCHEN GREEN GARDENS

TOHA has resolved to address the econimic crisis caused by the pandemic through empowering refugees to cultivate nutritious green vegetables in home gardens during the rainy season to supplement the food assistance given out by the WFP in conjunction with its implementing partner Hunger Fighters, which have been the only reliable sources of food.

FIGHTING STIGMA IN CHILDREN THROUGH SOCCER

TOHA has established a soccer team to combat stigma, trauma, and social isolation among children and young people through a safe, healthy, and fun team environment. Athletics are also an important way of building self-esteem, discipline, and dedication among young people.

ALPHA & OMEGA MINISTRY

TOHA established a Christian program that is set to bring up vulnerable Children and youth into a Christian lifestyle. Alpha & Omega also teaches them to become followers of Jesus and grow spiritually through praise, worship preaching, and discipleship.

MUSIC ACADEMY PROGRAM

Many of the vulnerable children who benefit from TOHA’s services are avid musicians with a great deal of talent, and their services are often requested at celebrations and ceremonies in the Nakivale community. Some young people are even able to earn a living with their musical talents by performing at community events.

ARTS (Drawing Pictures) & MUSIC PROMOTION

This program provides talented youth in Nakivale with extracurricular training in the visual arts, offering courses in drawing in order to aid these young people in achieving their full artistic potential and promoting feelings of empowerment and self-esteem in the process.

PRACTICAL CULTURES (Drama & Traditional Dance)

TOHA offers Drama and cultural programs that provide vulnerable youth in Nakivale with productive ways to channel their creative and artistic talents outside of school hours and offer an alternative to alcoholism, drug use, petty crime, and other social ills that plague vulnerable young people in Nakivale.

ONE TEAM ONE HOPE

OneTeamOneHope is a program designed to provide young adolescent boys and girls with basic computer literacy, as well as skills in information technology and photography, in order to empower them engage  with the world and secure opportunities for education and employment.
